Rough Ride, 3 June 2007

7 01 2007

Throughout the year Sussex Muddy@rse plans on attending organised MTB events. Although the majority will be local, occasionally some may require travelling.

So, the Rough Ride. A non-competitive enduro ride held on the Welsh border in Kington, near Hereford, (just above the Brecon Beacons) which is approximately 3 1/2hrs drive from Brighton. This Rough Ride is not currently an ‘official’ club event due to the distance involved and also because we don’t all know what we’ll be doing on that weekend.

Rough Ride 2007

From the Rough Ride website

The most laidback moorland romp of a ride in the UK, stunning views, enthusiastic and capable organisation, great campsite, free post ride meal, a tiny town chock full of real ale pubs, hunkered down under the eastern edge of Hergest Ridge. Loads of tracks opened for this one event due to a really nice bunch of landowners, For 2007 the over 80% off-road ride has an over 80% changed course. We don’t mind what speed you go, you’re here to enjoy yourselves.

Now in our 5th year, we will once again be offering a choice of single loop long and short routes across the outstanding countryside of East Radnorshire in the Welsh Marches, largely on unspoilt moorland trails away from farmland, and with NO forestry. The Rough Ride is not a race, but it is a challenging ride – the the 75km route includes more than 7000 feet of climbing and fast descending. There is a shorter option of around half distance for anyone who would like to enjoy the great scenery and riding, but doesn’t fancy taking on the full challenge. And you don’t need to decide which route you want to follow until the day itself – you can even change your mind during the ride, as both routes share the first section.

I’ve been twice in recent years and it has a great atmosphere. There’s usually about 800 entrants. It costs £24 when pre-booked before March, which includes free camping, T-shirt and post ride meal among other things. Anyone that wants to attend can enter under the Sussex Muddy@rse team name, and we don’t need to apply as a group.

At the moment this post is just to gauge interest to see if its worth going ahead with. Click the link above to visit their website for more details.
