Club Ride – 24 June – Devils Dyke to Ditchling Beacon

11 06 2007

It’s time for another Muddy@rse ride and we’re crossing everything for a nice dry one this time because it’s our first ‘Killer Loop’. With approx. 24 miles of classic South Downs riding on mixed trails, some steep & technical, and over 1100mtrs of climbing, this isn’t for the fainthearted although it is all achievable. The nature of some of these trails can be very slippery & slimey if we’ve had rain so we are hoping for blistering summer weather otherwise this ride can’t take place.

So keep your eyes peeled on the blog for confirmation of ride nearer the date, if it’s been nice and dry the week before we’ll be doing this Killer Loop, if not then we’re returning to the singletrack of Whiteways.

Anyway, in brief the ride is from Devils Dyke to Ditchling Beacon and back without using the South Downs Way, however, this really doesn’t do the ride justice. It is very tough with sections of vertigo inducing singletrack and some brutal climbs.

With a Muddy@rse starting time of 10-30am we do not expect to return to the cars until 6pm and this is provided we ride as a group and do not have any major mechanicals.

There are NO OPTIONS TO BUY FOOD OR DRINK during the ride apart from ice-cream vans at Devils Dyke and Ditchling Beacon so bring plenty of food and water, with at least 5 energy bars. Mind you tempting you home could be the nice cold pint at the Devil’s Dyke Pub, I know my name’s on one and the views are fantastic !

Although the ride is tough we are never far from an escape route and we can direct anyone back to Devils Dyke from any point (Explorer Map 122 will be useful). So hopefully see you at the large carpark in front of Devils Dyke pub for a fun-filled character building event. Just look out for my big blue bus (Zaffira).

Date: Sunday 24 June

Start time: 10.30am
Finish time: 6.00pm
Meet Place: Devils Dyke Pub Car Park

Hope to see you there

PS I know this date clashes with Mountain Mayhem so good luck to everyone who’s taking part
