Mid Month Pedal – Wivelsfield Green, Sept 07

9 09 2007

We didn’t know how popular these rides would be so it was a really nice surprise to see 15 new and old faces turn out today in the September sunshine for our first Mid Month Pedal.

These rides are shorter & less technical than the monthly Club Rides (although not a doddle) and we’re hoping they’ll encourage people onto the trails, enjoying the fab riding we have in and around Sussex.  We weren’t disappointed in the 10 mile route Muddy@rser Tony had put together, literally starting over the road from home (you lucky devil!).

From the car park and a few metres down the road we were straight into the woods for some fun singletrack trails which criss-crossed each other giving interesting lines and allowing a bit of choice for everyone.  New Muddy@rser Mike’s line was so interesting he almost impaled himself on a rogue tree branch that was lurking in the undergrowth!  Blimey … regroup, check all limbs still in tact, and onward.

We were now heading towards Ditchling Common via more wooded singletrack.  Some narrow sections, some overgrown, some chopped up by horses but all good fun and no hill climbing.  Now that made a nice change 🙂

Next was Figure of 8 – crossing a main road (unavoidable) into more woods back out onto the road and de ja vu retrace tracks back along the Common main bridleway.  Out into the open and time to stop for a munch and chat in the blazing sunshine.  This was home to our second incident where Ollie’s front wheel got sucked in by a rut completely hidden in the long grass.  Almost over the bars, landing right by GF Sally who promptly split her sides and then shared her banana to console the wounded !

We’d only completed 5 miles but it had all been mainly singletrack and good fun so we were keen for more.  Winding our way back we stuck to the woods eventually returning to our start point.  Time in hand we went back up a small climb and headed towards the local ‘downhill’ section, past the collapsed WW2 Nissan hut.  Quick U-turn onto the (aherm) correct trail and we were at the top.  Choose your line, jump if you dare, mind the drop-off at the end.  Everyone made it in one piece and were buzzing, good job !

Back to the CP for homemade Banana & Walnut cake and the now habitual maltloaf (thanks Mike & Tony’s OH).  We said goodbye to Ian and Steve and headed off for another small loop making our total riding to 10 1/2 miles.  Nice !

Big thanks go to Tony for sharing his local trails with us and leading today’s ride and to everyone who turned up today.  We hope you enjoyed what we’d put together and look forward to seeing you on a Muddy@rse ride in the not too distant future.  In the meanwhile just get out and ride and enjoy our Late Summer on beautiful dry dusty trails !
