4th Birthday Ride

12 11 2010

Countryfile Factoid:  A 1/4 of Surrey is covered by trees!  And we all know what trees = SINGLETRACK! and in Surrey there’s lots of it 🙂 – anyone who saw the programme last week will have spotted Leith Hill in there.

Muddy@rse Factoid:  we just love to ride, no matter the weather.

Weather Factoid:  today is gonna be wet !

That just about sums up our 4th birthday bash.  Sinewy, slidey and smiley.  As is the usual tradition we always celebrate our beginning (Oct 06).  At the time of our birth the nearest MTB club was Worthing.  Muddy@rse however was borne out of necessity because East Sussex had no place for likeminded riders to chat, socialise and ride together; others have since copied our very successful format which is a great compliment, but there will only ever be one original and it’s still free:  Sussex Muddy@rse – Happy 4th Birthday.

29 riders fancied getting down & dirty today, the ride didn’t disappoint.  Mechanicals (2 x gear hangers; 1 complete rear mech and many brake pads) gave riders old and new chance to catch up, trees keeping the worst of the weather off us.  The trails were fab – u – lous dar-hling! (said in Surrey-esque stylee)

Telegraph Row, Barry Knows Best, Yoghurt Pots, Hot Cheese Straw to name just a few all punctuated with the obligatory stop at the Peaslake Deli for ….Hot Cheese Straws of course, and a mug of tea.

For me, it was my first proper wet technical ride since my crash a year ago and I wasn’t sure if I’d tense up or just get on with it.  You know what?  I really enjoyed it.  I haven’t felt like that for a long time on my bike and it reminded me that I JUST LOVE BERMS, bigger the better for me please.

Some riders today had never been to the Surrey Hills and couldn’t believe the quality and quantity of trails on offer.  Damn right, I know I’ll always be grateful for the open access we have to this area – the Afan of the South – where I cut my technical teeth many years ago.  If you don’t know where to ride, just get out the car and follow your nose and you’ll find plenty of trails to keep you happy for many an hour on Pitch, Hombury & Leith Hills.

The ride finished with birthday cake (thanks everyone who brought a contribution), coffee and me stepping down from running the club for a year.  Rich tried his best to make me cry with a few kind words and presenting a one-of-a-kind Muddy@rse mug as a birthday pressie, designed by our very own style icon Guy (is that a distant production line I hear?).  Thanks to everyone for making my day so special, it was a pleasure as always to share some time with you all.

Happy birthday Muddy@rse I know you’ll have many, many more because you’re worth it.  See you in a year!

Love from Lisa x
